Special Education Literacy Laboratory

The Special Education Literacy Laboratory offers an opportunity for the Michael D. Eisner College of Education to bring its extensive expertise and educational resources to children in the community with special needs, while also providing an opportunity for our students to have active learning experiences.

Community Service

The Special Education Literacy Laboratory provides one-on-one literacy tutoring to children in the local community who struggle with reading.  Established in 2000 with initial funding from the Regional Coordinating council, the Special Education Literacy Laboratory currently serves children from local schools, grades K-12, each semester.  Services include an assessment of reading needs and intensive instruction tailored to the individual needs of each student.  One hour tutoring sessions occur weekly for a minimum of 10 weeks.  Tutoring sessions are guided by structured protocols and reflect the latest, most up to date research in effective literacy instruction.

Clinical Training

This project provides a high quality, supervised clinical experience for students enrolled in advanced graduate level coursework.  With faculty support, guidance, and supervision, this hands-on tutoring experience is an opportunity to design and apply assessment and teaching strategies taught in university classes and to implement evidence based instruction.  Tutors are primarily experienced teachers working toward the professional credential and/or master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Therapy or Reading Specialist programs.
