The purposes of the Students in Service program are to meet critical community needs by engaging higher education students in service, and fostering within them an ethic of civic responsibility. Through the program, students are introduced to local, regional, and national Service-Learning opportunities, resulting in a regional network of student leaders committed to serving and strengthening their local communities. Students serve in partnership with schools and community-based organizations in the areas of education, human needs/services, the environment, public safety, and Homeland Security. With rising tuition costs, and competing interests, Students in Service strives to make service a viable opportunity for students.
To this end, Students in Service offers each student the opportunity to choose one of three terms of service (essentially, the number of hours s/he agrees to complete). Upon successful completion of a term of service, students are eligible for an Education Award (scholarship), which can be applied towards outstanding student loans or the Cost of Attendance at a college or university.
The Education Award amount varies, depending on the term of service:
300 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,000.00 Education Award (scholarship) One year
450 Hour Term of Service = $ 1,250.00 Education Award (scholarship) One year
900 Hour Term of Service = $ 2,362.50 Education Award (scholarship) Two years
AmeriCorps is one stream of National Service, initiated in 1994 by President Clinton, and often referred to as the “domestic Peace Corps.” AmeriCorps is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with Education Awards in exchange for community service. Nationally, over 150,000 AmeriCorps members have helped to meet the nation’s critical needs in the areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.
Before you can receive your entrance paperwork you must complete and print the Pre Service Orientation located at www.studentsinservice.org. You also need to schedule an in-person orientation to go over the program in detail.
You will become part of the CSUN Volunteer Council, an award winning student group. The Volunteer council serves as the face community service and volunteerism of the CSUN community.
